Do any of you play HU for real money?
« on: June 26, 2009, 04:51:29 am »
Hi, I hope no one minds me making the first post, but this doesn’t belong in the beta forum. I play microstakes level full ring and 6-max on PokerStars and have enough stats to know I’m a winner in those games. I have absolutely no idea how i rate versus HU cash players because the smallest stakes are 25c/50c and I believe you need a 50 buy-in bakroll to be comfortable, and I havent felt willing to commit that much cash yet.

Do any of you have any track record in these cash games? Us newbies here have clearly not played anywhere near enough games on this site yet, but i feel i’m beginning to get some initial idea about relative strengths of my opponents and my weaknesses (not necessarily at all related to how much i’m up or down of course in this small sample).

Anyway I guess we’re all here at least partly for the competition and it might be nice to get an idea not just of how we all rate relative to one another, but maybe someone here is really good at HU cash (and thus I could feel pretty good for example if I’m not getting slautered by them in the long run   :)!

Anyway – it open for discussion folks

(or flame away …. or not after all this isn’t 2+2 )

You could play small sng:s on Pokerstars or Fulltilt, if you really want to play for real money with a $50 bankroll.

I think you’d learn more if you play a few k hands and put some effort in looking at hands. Once most decisions become automatic you should be good enough to have a decent positive expectation playing low limits and avoiding grinders.

My thoughts – I’ve mucked around at 50NL HU (clear winner) – 200NL HU (losing/maybe breakeven over a smallish sample, ahem!) and was a mediocre midstakes 6-max semi-regular a couple of years ago.

I found that at 100NL and above you will only get a regular game if you’re a loser. My recent results aren’t that good at either 6m or HU (since I stopped playing regularly), but I’d still get mostly sat out on last time I tried playing, even sometimes at 50NL. (And when I didn’t get sat out on or got joined it was normally a pretty strong player or a short stack)

Also, it seems to be getting worse – so 6 months before that, I could usually get a game at 100NL but not 200NL, 2 months ago usually at 50NL but not 100NL.

Perhaps I’ve been unlucky, or there’s a strong player with a similar name to me or something :)

(But I think the fundamental problem with cash HU is that there’s no (short term) incentive to play anyone who might be as good as you, unlike 6-max and higher.)

So if you want to play cash (vs SNGs) I’d recommend sticking with the 6-max route (if you prefer shorter handed then try to start tables), and then trying HU once you’re over-bankrolled for 6m at the equivalent limit and can just sit down and wait while playing other games and then not worry if you suffer a big downswing (or encounter somebody much better than you).

I have no SNG experience so I can’t comment on that. You might get some good responses at the 2+2 HU forums, even if some of them are impolite!

If you want to play some tables on here, let me know and I can probably provide some feedback compared to opponents I’ve played in real HU. (I’m sure lots of others here could do that better than me FWIW – I’m mostly just interested in poker theory these days)

HU players are the worst (best?) at dodging regulars so your experience is very standard.

1-on-1 is the best form for game selection as you’ll never have to share a bad player with a grinder. Imo that’s one of the worst features of poker online as it allows untalented players to create vast stretches of empty hu-tables  both discouraging action and draining the pool of easy money.

When anyone can create 20 hu tables making money heads up becomes much more about simply putting in hours waiting for bad players than skill.

It’s similiar to the issues surrounding shorstacking in that it benefits untalented players wanting to grind out easy money and is detrimental to the overall action on the site.
