End of the Year Tournament?
« on: December 14, 2009, 09:48:03 pm »
Hi everyone,

VARoadstter had the great idea of "Tournament of Champions" in the other thread earlier, but since we don’t have the functionality for hosting tournaments on this site yet, I’d like to know if anyone would be interested in playing a little private tournament at one of the "real" online poker rooms (like Full Tilt Poker)?

I would suggest keeping it open to all CorrespondencePoker.com players who wanted to join, to make sure we got enough players to participate.

If you are interested, please let me know the dates/times that would work the best for you, and I will try to organize it. (I’m not sure if Full Tilt has some limitations for who can start private tournaments, or if there are minimum number of players needed, but I will find all that out if we have enough interested players.)

Thanks,

Teppo

Edit: I guess the game format should be decided too. This site is for heads-up poker only, but if majority prefer a ring tourney instead, we could definitely do that too.

Hi Teppo and all, I’d be happy to play. I live in the south of England so most evenings would be ok that tie in with anyother players.

Regards

Hi, sure it would be nice to play with you guys. I prefer that date of the tournament would be after new year if possible when I’m at home again. Other interesting detail would be the exact time of the tournament when we have people playing around the world in different time zones like in Finland, UK and USA. Any players from some other countries ?

In theory I’d love to do it, not sure precisely what times would be best for me since I can’t play either at home or at work!

So there’s enough people without me, and you can arrange a time which fits with the east coast of the US, then I’ll try to sneak off somewhere and join in…

Usually 10-20% of the active members of a forum is a very good turn out for this kind of tournament, considering the varied schedules and so on.

I think the easiest way to do this is to just decide on a date and go for it.

It would also be good to have an IRC-channel, or something similiar for people to communicate in real time.

Anyway, I’d probably be able to play. Preferably on FTP and a 7-game if we’re doing the TOC thing.

Allrighty, I took the liberty of choosing the time and other details for the tournament, and it will be on Sunday, January the 10th at Full Tilt Poker.

I thought this was the best time considering people may be away for the holidays, and how we live in different parts of the world with different time zones. It will be morning in the U.S. and evening in the Europe at the time of the tournament.

Full details can be found here: http://www.correspondencepoker.com/tournamentinfo.php

Wohoo! We got over 700 people to register for our "Tournament of Champions" just overnight! Unfortunately that’s a lot more that we even have players at correspondencepoker.com.

So, obviously hosting freerolls at Full Tilt is not going to work after all, and quick googling reveals at least 6 websites sharing the password for this tournament too.

My apologies for all who were interested in playing this. And if anyone has more experience in running private tournaments and how to actually make it work, I’d like to hear it and would be happy to give it another try if there’s a way to keep it private.

One trick some sites use is to have a trusted users list that gets the passwords. Each tournament you can add some new names to the list. Then if someone leaks the password you have a good chance of identifying the culprit.

Freerolls really doesn’t work, but both Stars and Full Tilt allow password protection for private tournaments, so that should work fine. Especially as the software are head and shoulders above other sites.

I think those requires a buy-in of at least 5+1, but it’s good if the players have a little skin in the game. Personally I would prefer a buy-in upwards of $50 or $100 (that way it hurts a little to lose, and the winner can afford a nice dinner or equivivalent), but most people seem to think that’s too high for an online tournament.

I’d also like to see other games than NL.

So I’m confused … what happened exactly … do people really trawl websites looking for passwords to freerolls and then post them for all to see?! Surely not…

(Even if so, amazing that 700 people bothered to sign up! Perhaps you should employ kidology and call it "tournament of mediocre dull people" or something to disuade glory seekers?!)

Considering I’m life time loser in all games except nl, limit hold’em, pot-limit draw and stud8 I don’t think you need to worry too much about that.

I suspect most of us haven’t even played all of those games you list, never mind the others….

(FWIW I’d love to have time to learn and play a mixed set of pot limit games, I can live without ever sitting at a limit game again!)

And now it’s actually ~1,600 people who’ve signed up (and I expected maybe 10-20 people to join). Too funny! Don’t know exactly how the password leaked out so quickly, but freerolls don’t seem to work so something else will need to be tried the next time – and thanks to everyone for sharing your ideas!

Akorps’ suggestion of "trusted user list" makes perfect sense, but I personally don’t think it’s the best solution due to the fact that it would force us to "play favorites" instead of keeping the tourney open to all of us who are interested.

Running a real money tourney like John Deer suggested would seem to solve most of the problems, since if there was no extra money added and it wasn’t free, there shouldn’t be any incentive for outsiders to "crash" our tourney either as there wouldn’t be any added benefit for doing that compared to playing one of the regular tourneys they keep running almost non-stop. It might cut down the number of participants a little, but that’s a minor issue compared to what we just witnessed with our attempt to organize a freeroll.

So, if the same date and time works for you, I could try setting up a new real money tourney with the minimum allowed buy-in (probably ~$5 USD)? And if we got 5-10 players to join it would be a decent start and I’d be happy with it. So please let me know if you’d be interested in this and able to do it with <10 days notice, and if even a few people "commit" to it I definitely want to give it another try. (Sorry John for suggesting the minimum buy-in, but I think initially that’s what we need to start with to know how many people we are interested in these types of tourneys, and if it works we can always try to increase the buy-in for the future tournaments.)

I meant to comment John’s suggestion for non-NLHE games too but forgot it in my previous post.

And actually I think SmokinAl already expressed what my main points would have been too. I agree that it might be too much to expect most of us (including myself) to know other games than NLHE, considering it’s the only game that’s been offered on this site so far.

Adding Pot Limit Omaha to CorrespondencePoker, however, is one of my higher priorities for 2010, and I am excited about starting to learn it. All the other games are legitimate suggestions too, but I can’t really think that far ahead yet as I don’t even know the rules of the other games or how easy/difficult they would be to implement if, for example, they weren’t "flop games" like Hold ’em and Omaha…
